Informed Consent and Capacity to Consent to Research among Older adults

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to address informed consent process for community-dwelling older adults to take part in social research by theoretical review and empirical survey. Data were obtained form 201 community-residing older adults. According to literature review on informed consent, valid consent can only be given when potential research participant has the capacity to consent to research. The results revealed that 83.9% of the sample had the capacity to consent to research and 16.1% failed to show the capacity. In addition, the level of education was significantly related with the older adults¡¯ capacity to consent to research. Older adults with high level of education were more likely to have the capacity. Based on the findings of this study, implications for gerontological research were discussed.
